Making a site private

There was a need for a private site such as can be built on wordpress.com.

As a first step I’m using My Private Site (WordPress plugin listing). This allows only logged-in users but doesn’t restrict further than that. Also I’m just using whole-site settings although this plugin allows carving out exceptions and other creative options.

At the time I set up this private site, there was only one user of this blog. When others are added, by default they will be able to access this private blog if logged in, which may not be what I want as more users are added to the roster.

Another more advanced option, that’s even more popular, is Profile Builder. It supports restricting content based on user role, which is closer to what I will need, but I don’t know if it supports site-wide restrictions that are role-based.

An option that’s even more popularer is Members (GitHub repository). It looks like it’s built with a crisp knowledge of the WordPress roles regime, and has a private site feature. Again, I don’t know if it support site-wide restrictions that are role-based, but it seems likely.
